Ludi Lunt ideas forum

Welcome to the LudiLunt ideas pages.

Participants are encouraged to share ideas and engage in discussions ahead of the LudiLunt hackathon weekend to help us all make the most of the time we’ll have at the Lunt and really hit the ground running.

Add you own ideas, comment on others’ ideas and vote for your favourites below

I've a great idea I'd like to share:

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Start at the entry...

    Hi Matt,

I popped along with my husband and partner John to the Hackathon this afternoon, just before lunch. I had a chance to have a quick look around the site during that period. I noted some of the ideas:

Amphitheatre (rather obvious use for the underutilised Gyrus with its fantastic acoustics)
History walks / talks and ghost tours (I think there is a ghost hunt already scheduled with Dusk Til Dawn).
I don’t know what the blue beam is at all!
Play area – always a good idea.
    Tea room always popular
Ongoing archaeology or smaller signs showing where…

    • Engage more widely by challenging dusty British Empire approaches to understanding the Romans in Britain

Can we try to tell the stories / show the lives of the women, children and men who weren’t soldiers of the Empire; the people who the Fort was here to control and whose resources the Fort relied on?

Could we get a wider range of people engaged by inviting them to consider Roman soldiers' complex similarities to (/differences from) squaddies in Afghanistan now or in the Raj 100 years ago, or German soldiers on Jersey in WWII, or many similar examples - and to contrast the lives of the soldiers with the lives of the "natives" more critically than…

      • Symposium

The narrative of the Lunt Roman Fort was largely devised in the 1960s and 1970s and a lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then. I think it would be a good idea to establish a thinkers group at the Lunt to re-evaluate some of the assumptions that underlie our understanding of the Romans in Britain.

          • Great food & retail offer

At the moment, a visit doesn't last long enough...have a really good cafe and shop which becomes part of the reason for visiting.

            • Leave the 21st Century behind with Camps where people have an immersive experience.

Camp for a few days, take part in a siege or something like brewing or a cheese making task. Build a barn, muck out the horses, weed the veg patch. Eat Roman food, sleep in Roman dwellings, party like a Roman, smell, taste, hear etc what the Romans did, both good and bad. Only use Roman currency. Pot luck whether you're a slave or a master. Leave the 21st Century behind ... Go Roman!

              • Latin Classes

Latin is currently seeing a resurgence of interest as is Classics as a subject at all levels. The Lunt Roman Fort is the perfect venue for intensive Latin weekends and a base for a Classics summer school.

                • Food and growing ....

is there space, permission , resources ... to have a veg /herb garden on site?
lots of 'learning' points to be had from how Romans/the population survived.
Lots of potential wider (political and lifestyle) issues to rehearse for visitors - biodiversity, landscapse change.
Lots of potential for community involvement in food/cooking /growing programmes - lots of energy in this at present ... partners with Ryton Organic Gardens??

                  • Recreate the entire Fort in augmented reality

Perhaps in combination with some of the other ideas posted here, augmented reality can be used to allow visitors to see the entire structure as it would have been viewed at its zenith.
Visitors could stand anywhere on the Fort site with their smartphone or tablet and see 3D buildings pop up on their screen, bringing the site to life. As well as being explored at the Fort, the models could be viewed at home or in the classroom, forming part of national curriculum studies. There could be associated text, static images and video, narrated by an expert.
                    We have…

                    • Engineering and architecture

Events focussed on engineering and architecture skills...try to use similar equipment and materials to recreate weaponry, bricks, heating systems etc...relearn traditional skills. This could be adapted to team problem solving workshops for school groups, DT projects, business team building sessions.

                        • Virtual tour and buildings recreation

recreate each phase of the fort virtually this allows the site to be contextualised, recreate 1 phase as they have done at Arbea. this could be done over an extended period as they do at Chiltern open air museum. This would create a Roman historical site unmatched in Central England

                          • Authentic Roman immersion days

Brigantium, near York, offers day trips where pupils and teachers all wear roman clothing and take part in authentic military and domestic activities including food. They sell a video of the day to the children afterwards. We take our group every year. Could offer for adults too...overnight stay ?

with so many Roman treasures in the west mids and at least 3 Roman roads criss crossing warwickshire ... we could increase visitors by creating itineries across sites - Lunt, Alcester, Wall, Wroxeter, Mancetter, Cirencester etc... these could be short, include museum with artefact visits, or longer/annual events ... a route march/camping trail

                              • Tap into local talent pool

Create link with local universities and colleges so that students develop events to market and run at the Lunt as part of their course. I saw a really good interactive volcano workshop at natural history museum that had been designed and run by geography students taking a teaching module. A real win- win and there are so many subjects that link the the Lunt

Minecraft is a big thing (im told)
                                  great for kids interest
Great for 'making greet architectural models'
great for engineering ideas (all very Lunt)

use the Minecraft models to print out modular pieces and recreate tyour own fort

                                    • 2000 Years old in 2060

Children now can help to construct time capsules linking 2000 years of history and then bring their own children back in 2060. It's not so far away that a programme of events could be started from now onwards maybe a longitudinal comparison of life then, now and add in what it's like in 2060 for different groups in society ...

                                        • Indoor and outdoor, themed play areas

Site needs to be all-weather. Indoor and outdoor Roman-themed play areas would help.
